Setting the tone of the game

In light of my desire to try this: You’re all going to die.

I’ve decided that for the March trip, I’ll be bringing each player a small flashlight. When we play “those meddling kids” I’ll turn off the lights and require that everyone play by flashlight. If your character dies, you must turn off your light.

Has anyone done anything like this? Does anyone have any advice? It’s kind of Survivor-esque, which (though a cheesy show) is the “pick ‘em off one by one” feel I want to capture. I’m hoping to tone the game very Call of Cthulhu-esque without making the spiral to madness and oblivion so pervasive.

One Response to Setting the tone of the game

  1. Kevin says:

I’d like to say this was a nice touch to the game and should be considered as an addition to any tone setting technique repository other GMs have. Hopefully by doing this, the players felt a bit more isolated and connected to the game.

Props go out to Luke who also helped to set the tone of the “You’re All Going to Die” game by reacting quite nicely and appropriately to the first dead body. In most RPGs, a dead body wouldn’t raise a single eyebrow; much less elicit any horrific response. And for the record, Luke isn’t the player I honestly would have anticipated reacting to the body in a negative manner at all. But he did – once again demonstrating his growth as a player. Kudos Luke.
